Passing of Life Member James Derstine, Sr.

It is with deep sadness and regret that the officers of the Sellersville Fire Department announce the passing of Life Member James Derstine, Sr. Jim joined our department in 1959 and was an active member for many years. James W. Derstine, Sr., a life-long resident of Sellersville, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2022, in The Community at Rockhill, West Rockhill Township. He was 84.

He was the beloved husband of the late Pauline “Polly” K. (Gerhard) Derstine for 54 years until her death in 2012.

Born in Sellersville, he was a son of the late D. Walter and V. Marie (Sturm) Derstine. Jim was a graduate of Pennridge High School

From 1967-1963, Mr. Derstine served with the U S. Army National Guard.

Jim had been employed for 42 years as a foreman by Delbar Products, Perkasie. He retired in 2002 to spend time with his wife and grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Sellersville, where he had served as an usher and on Consistory. A life member of the Sellersville Fire Department, Jim joined in 1959 and helped with the annual SFD Carnival, Bingo, Ham Dinners, and Breakfasts.

Jim especially loved spending time at the beach with his family. He enjoyed working on cars and trucks and also liked model railroads and steam trains. He was an avid gardener and landscaper. He particularly loved attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.

Mr. Derstine is survived by his two sons: James W. Derstine, Jr. and his fiancé, Kim Eubanks, of Quakertown, Douglas Derstine and his wife, Kimberly, of Lansdale; five grandchildren: Justin Derstine and his wife, Laura, of Quakertown, Jessica, Amanda, Matthew, and Jacob Derstine, all of Lansdale; and a great-granddaughter, Hope Emily Derstine, of Quakertown.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Derstine.

A Memorial Service will be scheduled in the Spring of 2022.

Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 104 Green Street, Sellersville, PA 18960 or the Sellersville Fire Department, P.O. Box 315, Sellersville, PA 18960.
