Sellersville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary

100th Anniversary Banquet - May 2010
On the evening of January 18th, 1910, the Ladies of the Sellersville Firemen had met in Firemen's Hall (2nd floor of the 1888 firehouse) to organize a Ladies Auxiliary of the Sellersville Fire Company. Throughout the Ladies Auxiliary's history, they have always had the desire to help the fire company in anyway possible. From the original charter filed in 1924, "The purpose for which the corporation is formed is the collection of money for procuring apparatus and appliances for fighting fires for the various fire companies of Sellersville, Pennsylvania, and for the furnishing of nourishment for firemen during fires and aid them in fighting fires." The original charter is proudly on display in the present day fire house.
The first officers of the Auxiliary were:
President - Mary Genter |
Vice President - Mrs. William S. Shelly |
Recording Secretary - Mrs. B. H. Smith |
Financial Secretary - Mrs. William G. Shelly |
Treasurer - Mrs. Thomas A. Wagner |
Trustee - Mrs. James F. Cressman |
Trustee - Mrs. Willaim Rauch |
Trustee - Mrs. Edwin B. George |
After man years of hosting events in the 1888 firehouse to support the men, by June 1924 the ladies became impatient. The men, who at the time shared the firehouse with the Borough for their Borough Hall, still thought the building was sufficient for their needs. The ladies insisted to the men that the current firehouse was "entirely too small to take care of a crowd and make worthwhile money at any of their company benefits." After months of inaction, the ladies purchased the lot on Main Street with the "understanding that a building will be erected as soon as practicable." By summer 1928, they finally got their wish and the new firehouse was officially opened.
100th Anniversary
In May 2010, the ladies held a banquet to celebrate 100 years of supporting the fire department. Throughout their history many different events events have been hosted to raise funding for many different pieces of equipment and apparatus. Bingos, bake sales, public suppers, craft fairs, flower sales, etc., the list goes on and on.
To this day, our ladies still support our efforts with their many fundraising activities. Our fire department's ladies auxiliary is one of the oldest continuously operating in our area. We are, as always, very proud of their hard work to support our efforts! If you're interested in joing the team, find more information on the application below. You do not need to live within the Sellersville area to be a member!
